Arms seizures: Turkey won’t support any dangerous shipment to Nigeria – Ambassador

The Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Hakan Cakil has said that his home country, Turkey would never do anything that would jeopardize security and safety of Nigeria and wellbeing of her citizens, pledging “Turkey will not support any dangerous shipment to Nigeria.”

The Turkish Ambassador made the pledge in a meeting between him and the management of the Nigeria Customs Service today in Abuja following series of arms and ammunition imported from the country to Nigeria.

This development was contained in a press release issued by Joseph Atta, National Public Relations Officer of the Service and a copy was made available to PortNewsNigeria.

The Comptroller General of Customs Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd) expressed to the envoy the concerns of the Nigeria Customs and that of Nigerians on the treat the four different arms which were seized pose to the security of Nigeria and her citizens.

Both Nigeria Customs and Turkish Embassy agreed to work together to stop the dangerous trend and use the situation as opportunity to strengthen tides to prevent the use of either country as a base for export of harmful items to other,

Highlights of the meeting were: The Turkey Ambassador restated his country’s support for Nigeria’s security and wellbeing, saying that Turkey will not support any dangerous shipment to Nigeria.

That all four shipments intercepted were false declarations on bills of lading, it is a clear case of smuggling.

The Turkish Ambassador will immediately communicate to his home country, findings from the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters, with view to fishing out criminals behind the illegal arms shipment to Nigeria.

That a team of Nigeria Customs Service visits the Turkish Customs to further discuss ways of nipping such arms export from Turkey as well as strengthening agreement on mutual customs assistance.

That Nigeria Customs Service provides for the Turkish authority, list of prohibited items and in the case of arms, samples of End User Certificate to enable them always verify approving any legal export to Nigeria.

That the Turkish Government will co-operate with Nigeria in every step to deal decisively with those found involved.
