Container operations at the Port of Douala in Cameroon have resumed despite a court order which prevents the creation of an authority for the management, operation, and maintenance of the container terminal.
The board of the Port Authority of Douala (PAD) announced operations at the terminal on the west coast of Africa began on 2 January and that by as of 8 January 1000 containers have been delivered. This is despite last month’s decision by a court in Cameroon to suspend the new management body’s activity until its legal status is determined.
PAD’s declaration follows the end of the concession contract for Douala International Terminal (DIT), a subsidiary of the Bolloré-APMT consortium, and suspension of a new concession awarded to MSC’s Terminal Investment Limited (TIL).
In a post on its Facebook page on 8 January, PAD stated: “The control of the container terminal of the port of Douala-Bonabéri takes up the challenge. Already a thousand containers delivered after a week of existence only on the docks of the wouri and a gross productivity of 18 movements per hour.”
PAD confirmed in a Facebook post on 2 January that the PAD management body was formed on 6 December “by resolution of the board of directors in full compliance with the requirements of the pad and those of the 2004 dealership contract”.
