Seme Customs generates N2.6 billion into government coffers

A total of N2,627,149,100.21 has been generated into coffers of the Federal Government by Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Badagry in Lagos State.

This was disclosed by the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the command, Comptroller Mohammed Uba Garba while briefing the media on the activities of the command in Seme Border from March to June 2019, last week.

According to Comptroller Garba, during the period the command seized 14 items that contravened the import guidelines.

The items seized were: 8304 bags of foreign rice with a Duty Paid Value (50kg, DPV of N88,728,240), 11 vehicles (DPV of N46,129,880), 1, 686 parcels of cannabis sativa (with street value worth of N30 million), 35 bags of sugar (50kg, DPV of N444,785), 31 jerry cans of vegetable oil (25 litre, DPV of N269,911), 138 kegs of PMS (25 litre, DPV of N212,100), 71 cartons of expired food seasoning (DPV of N458,109) and 336 cartons of alcoholic drinks (DPV of N4,776,525).

Others were: 175 of 6 yards of textiles (DPV of N2,242,287), 15 sacks of used clothes (DPV of N667,486), 28 sacks of medicament (DPV of N1,083,978), 410 sacks of school bags (DPV of N13,227,113), 2000 cartons of expired biscuits (DPV of N7,742,700) and a truck loaded with 493 packs of baby diapers (DPV of N4,100,000).

The CAC who noted that the grand total for both the seizure and revenue was N2,793,242,214.21 said six suspects were arrested during the period and vowed that the command would detect, arrest and prosecute those who fail to comply with the extant regulations.

While calling on patriotic Nigerians to support the command by reporting smuggling activity, Garba noted that the command aimed at leveraging on modern communication tools to improve cross border efficiency.

Comptroller Garba informed that a total of 25,000 bags of rice, 650 bags of sugar, 150 cartons of tin tomato, 150 bags of flour and 250 kegs of vegetable oil were transferred to IDPs in Yobe State. He added that some orphanage homes in Badagry axis benefitted from the relief materials.
