The Director-General, Standards Organisaion of Nigeria (SON) Malam Farouk Salim has called on the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporation and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC) to join hands with SON’s management in strengthening the system and providing enduring solutions to issues.
Mallam Salim made the call when he received the SSACGOC National and SON Executives at the organisation’s Laboratory Complex in Ogba, Lagos recently.
Mallam Salim enumerated some of the issues that require partnership between the Management and the Union as including improved staff productivity, discipline, welfare, service delivery, collaboration with stakeholders and greater contribution to the Nation’s socio-economic wellbeing.
The DG urged the SSASCGOC leadership to be objective in assessing SON management actions based on established standards operating procedures and rules.
He urged the Union to prevail on its members to optimise the use of all available platforms such as the WhatsApp and official email address forums for SON related developmental issues in the collective interest of all staff. “Let’s play down prayers and requests for favours as we shall be humane in making decisions and ensure that people are not denied their rights”, he said.
He expressed appreciation for the Union’s core values of productivity, partnership, dialogue and promotion of the rule of law as enumerated by the President General and assured of his preparedness to work with any leadership elected by the members.
Mallam Farouk stated that issues relating to the Staff Condition of Service, conversion, appropriate placement are already being looked into and would be tackled holistically after receiving the report of the Special Committee on the review and strengthening of management practices. He urged the Union to submit memorandum to the Committee on all issues of concern.
The DG promised to ensure that subsequent recruitment exercise in the organisation reflect organisational needs and aspirations. He urged the Union to support the SON Management towards taking the organisation to greater level of service delivery, socio-economic impact, staff welfare and advancement.
Addressing the DG earlier, the President General of SSASCGOC, Comrade Muhammad Yunusa urged the SON Management to pay greater attention to facilitating the approval and implementation of the Staff Condition of Service, promotion, conversion of qualified staff and human capital development including training on modern trends in industrial relations practices for Union leaders in the organisation.
The SSASCGOC President General also advocated accelerated attention to promotion issues as well as the jurisdiction between the Union and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) in SON.
Also contributing Comrades Omotosho Ayodele, pioneer President and Comrade Jerry Ogaga, current President of SSASCGOC, SON branch thanked the Director General for the facilitation to the Salaries and Wages Commission team on the Condition of Service document and pledged the support and loyalty of the Union members towards achieving the organisation’s mandate.
They urged the DG to look into appropriate placement for COREN registered Engineers and other professionals as well as consideration of qualified temporary staff for permanent employment.
