Nigeria’s Aviation Minister and the burdens of Fellow award

VISIT: Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika (right) and Honourary Consul General, Mr. Endre P. Deri from Hungary Embassy in Nigeria in the minister’s office in Abuja yesterday.

The award of Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society received by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, last week, has attracted a lot of mix feelings from Nigerians. The minister who sees the award as a plus for his efforts towards developing the air business in the country joyfully announced on his tweeter on May 15, 2021, thus “Glad to announce that I have been elected a Fellow as a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Alhamdulillah”

According to checks by PortNews on the minister’s tweeter account, while some Nigerians congratulated the minister and wished him more, others asked the minister the benefits his cherished Fellow would bring to the nation and her aviation industry when the national air carrier he promised is yet to materialize, salaries of air workers especially Arik Air are not paid, international flights such as Emirate Air cancelled for many months, airport facilities development not encouraging, etc. Other who reacted saw the opportunity to seek the favour of the minister.

As if the minister knew that the post would attract kudos and knocks, he never replied to them. But here are some of the reactions that trailed the fellowship honour of the minister’s followers as they appeared on the minister’s tweeter account.

How about Nigerian airways sir, you promised to revive the Nigerian airways since you came on board. Is unfortunate that the country like Nigeria doesn’t have Government commercial airlines. Please you have to think about it before its late.
