Peel Ports has helped its customer Aggregate Industries to deliver some concrete benefits in the company’s supply chain. In this guest blog, Major Projects Director Brian Downes explains how their choice of the Port of Liverpool is helping them to meet ambitious environmental targets.
The transportation of construction materials has many challenges. While on time delivery of products to our customers’ sites must always remain critical for the continued success of our business, we must also recognise and address the fact that our industry and the movement of our products has an environmental impact. One of Aggregate Industries key objectives, therefore, is to deliver products by the most sustainable approach.
As such, we have an extensive logistics service which ensures we can deliver our products throughout the UK and Northern Europe by road, rail and sea. We aim to minimise the environmental impact associated with the transport of our products, and we are committed to removing as much haulage from the roads as possible through the use of rail and water transport. For instance, in 2018 alone, we transported 4.8 million tonnes of material by rail and 6.8 million tonnes by ship.
We also strategically place our sites in order for them to be easily accessible by these means. For example, in 2018, 600,000 tonnes of aggregates were imported direct from our Glensanda quarry in Scotland into our terminal at Peel Ports, Seaforth. Within the Aggregate Industries terminal we have established a ready mixed concrete plant, meaning that from quarry to concrete production, zero road miles are involved, thus reducing the overall carbon footprint for the port.
This allowed us to be as efficient as possible when working with Peel Ports on their recently developed Liverpool2 container terminal. The distance by truck from the plant to the terminal is less than a mile, and working in collaboration with Peel Ports this proved a success both in terms of cost effective delivery and much reduced CO2 emissions.
Every batch of concrete that left our Seaforth ready mixed concrete plant for Liverpool2 – as with any batch from any of our sites – is subject to analysis from a Product Carbon Footprinting tool (PCF). The PCF, developed by the Carbon Trust, this involves the analyses mix design, transportation of raw materials and delivery to site to calculate the CO2 emissions of each individual concrete mix. As these calculations are based on each mix design, the calculations are bespoke per project and are not based on generic information.
By using this calculation capability prior to a project starting, and by demonstrating our commitment to reducing our environmental impact at every step, customers can be confident they are ordering a product that has the lowest possible CO2 emissions; from production right through to delivery.
